Circuits Built From Nanotubes Are a Future Possibility

We all know silicon devices have dominated computing architectures for years but are increasingly reaching limits that make it difficult to continue the rate of improvement we’ve enjoyed so long.

This doesn't mean the 'death of silicon' quite yet, but as IEEE.org reports,  we may be closer to innovation than we may think

"After decades of steady improvements to the efficiency and speed of our computer chips, brought about by physically shrinking the dimensions of silicon transistors, we’ve reached a point where the massive effort to miniaturize those switches ekes out only very modest gains in performance."

This brings us to carbon nanotubes.

This is one of the most promising materials to replace silicon in the long-term. These could be integrated with silicon devices with the eventual goal of replacing silicon.  There is still a long way to go, but the similarities with silicon fabrication processes can really help to move carbon nanotube computing forward.
